6 Must-Know Tips for Whisky Beginners

Whisky Tasting Party

Whisky is a complex drink that can seem daunting for beginners. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with 6 must-know tips for whisky beginners!

Whisky Tips for Beginners

1. Start with a single malt scotch

Single malt scotches are made from 100% malted barley and are typically lighter and more approachable than other types of whisky. The only off-putting aspect may be that they are not cheap.

Picking up a cheap bottom-of-the-shelf blended whisky may seem like a good place to start your whisky journey but it’s far from the truth. While there is nothing wrong with these whiskies, they aren’t going to give you the best guide on whether you like whisky or not.

While they aren’t cheap, they don’t need to be expensive either. Step into any supermarket and they will almost always have a deal on a single malt scotch whisky. Find one in the £20-£25 region or perhaps even look for a half-bottle (35cl/350ml) which will be a little cheaper.

2. Don’t start with island whisky

On the west coast of Scotland is a vast number of smaller islands that can make some of the best whiskies in the world. So, why should you avoid them? The reason is most of these whiskies are heavily peated which in simple terms, means they are harsh on the palette.

Many people, myself included, love that for several reasons but many others don’t and it’s not a good entry point. Someone may try a Laphroaig whisky and vow never to try whisky again. Go with something that will be a little smoother, with Speyside whiskies usually being a safe bet.

Once you’ve established yourself as a whisky lover, you can then step into the deep, dark and wonderful world of island whiskies.

3. Don’t be afraid to try new things

There are many different types of whisky out there, so don’t be afraid to explore! Try different styles and brands to find what you like best.

As we mentioned there with island whiskies, there can be plenty of differences between them. It may be that you love a peaty taste or perhaps you like nutty flavours or even fruity notes. All whiskies are different, so try a few.

4. Add a little water

Whisky can be strong, so adding a splash of water can help open up the flavors and make it more enjoyable. As you become a whisky lover, you almost become hardened too it. Any harsher whiskies will sit nicely on your tongue but this isn’t the case when you first start out.

With strong whiskies, you may even be prone to a little cough if you try and swallow too much. Adding a little water will ease your way into it.

And don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t add water to whisky. It helps you find those more subtle flavors and a lot of whiskies are watered down anyway to 40% abv.

5. Use a glass

Using a dedicated whisky glass will help you appreciate the aroma of the whisky as well as the taste. It’s good to get yourself two types of glass. One is a whisky-tasting glass that looks like the one in the image at the top of the page. These are perfect for aroma and trying out a new whisky for the first time.

The other is a high-quality tumbler glass. These are great for when you just want to relax with a great whisky that you know and love.

6. Take your time

Sipping slowly will help you savor the flavor and enjoy the experience. Whisky isn’t there to be glugged down like a pint of water when you’re gasping for a drink.

You always see it in the movies where an actor will down a glass of ‘whisky’. In reality, whisky lovers don’t do that, no one does that unless they want to get very drunk, very quickly. Savour your drink, and sip it slowly.
